Foreign men looking for Asian women: how to find real love in Asia

Every year, thousands of men from Europe, North America and Australia start looking for a partner in Asia. Some have lived or worked there, some fell in love with the region on holiday, and some simply found that the values they care about (family, loyalty, humour, a shared plan for the future) matched the people they met online. If you are a foreigner looking for Asian love, this guide covers what actually works: where to look, how to write to people, how to stay safe, and how to build something that lasts.

First: "Asian women" is not one type of person

Asia is home to more than four billion people. A software engineer in Singapore, a nurse in Cebu, a teacher in Chiang Mai and a shop owner in Ho Chi Minh City have very different lives, languages and expectations. The quickest way to put someone off is to treat them as a stereotype: "traditional", "obedient", "looking for a way out". Most women on dating sites are ordinary people with jobs, friends and opinions, looking for the same thing you are: someone kind, honest and serious.

So drop the assumptions, and get curious about the one person you are talking to.

Where foreigners meet Asian singles

  • International dating sites such as AsianLove, where both sides joined because they are open to dating across cultures. This saves you the awkward guesswork of local apps, where many people only want to meet someone nearby.
  • Through travel, by joining language exchanges, hobby groups, volunteering or classes rather than nightlife.
  • Through work and friends, which is still how many lasting couples meet.

On AsianLove you can search by country and city, for example singles in the Philippines or singles in Thailand, and add your travel plans so people in the place you are visiting can see you are coming.

Writing a profile that gets replies

Your profile is the first impression, and many people decide in seconds.

  • Use clear, recent photos of your face, without sunglasses, plus one or two that show your everyday life. Group photos and photos with cars are less helpful than you think.
  • Say what you are looking for, honestly. "Looking for a long-term relationship and, in time, marriage" is clearer than "seeing what happens".
  • Write about your life, not a list of demands. What do you do at the weekend? What are you proud of? What would a good Sunday together look like?
  • Avoid anything about appearance, age limits or "no drama" lists. They read as cold and they make sensible people scroll past.

Our dating profile tips go through this step by step.

The first messages

Read the profile, then write about something in it. "I see you love hiking. Have you been to Mount Pulag?" beats "Hi beautiful" every time. Keep the first message short, friendly and easy to answer, and do not send five messages if you have not had a reply yet.

Some practical points:

  • Mind the time zone. If you are in Europe and she is in Manila, you are six or seven hours apart. A good-morning message that arrives at 2 a.m. is not romantic.
  • English levels vary. Write in simple sentences and avoid slang. Many people use a translation app for longer messages, and that is fine.
  • Be patient with replies. Many people work long shifts, and some care for family after work.

Understand the cultural basics

A little knowledge goes a long way.

  • Family is central in most of Asia. Expect to hear a lot about parents, siblings and children, and expect that family opinion matters. Being polite and respectful to the family is part of dating the person.
  • Saving face. Open criticism, raised voices or embarrassing someone in public can damage trust quickly. Disagree gently and in private.
  • Indirect "no". In many cultures a direct refusal feels rude, so "maybe" or "I will try" can mean no. Ask kindly, and do not push.
  • Faith. The Philippines is mainly Christian, Thailand mainly Buddhist, Indonesia and Malaysia mainly Muslim. Respect matters more than agreement.

Be serious, and show it

Many women in Asia have met foreigners who were only looking for a holiday romance. That is why serious members often ask direct questions early: Are you married? Have you been here before? What do you want long term? Answer honestly. If you have children, say so. If you are divorced, say so. Consistency over weeks and months is what builds trust: doing what you said, calling when you said you would, and planning visits.

Money and scams: one simple rule

Never send money to someone you have not met in person. Not for a ticket, a visa, a hospital bill, a phone or a family emergency, however real the story sounds. Romance scammers target foreigners precisely because they are far away and want to help. A genuine partner will not ask you to choose between your savings and the relationship.

Other warning signs: someone who falls in love within days, avoids video calls, wants to move to another app straight away, or talks about investments or crypto. Our guide on how to spot a romance scam explains the common scripts.

Meeting in person

When you are ready to meet:

  • Video call first. It is the best way to know the person is who they say they are.
  • Meet in a public place the first time, such as a café, a mall or a restaurant, and book your own hotel.
  • Tell a friend where you are going.
  • Respect the pace. In many places, an early meeting with a friend or relative present is normal, and it is a good sign, not a problem.

Long distance and the future

Most cross-border relationships spend months or years apart. Plan the next visit before you say goodbye, keep a regular call time, and talk openly about the big questions: where you would live, work, children, and how you would support each other's families. Visa rules differ by country and change often, so check official government sources early rather than relying on forums. Our article on long-distance relationships in Asia covers this in more detail.
