Thai women dating foreign men: what Thai singles want from a relationship
Ask a Thai woman who is dating someone from abroad what she is looking for, and the answer is rarely what the stereotypes suggest. Usually it sounds like this: someone kind, someone honest, someone who respects her family, and someone who is serious. This guide is written for Thai women who are open to a foreign boyfriend, and for the men who hope to meet them, so both sides know what to expect.
Why many Thai women are open to dating foreigners
Every person has their own reasons, but some come up again and again:
- Shared interests and a wider world. Many Thai women have studied, travelled or worked with people from other countries and enjoy that mix of cultures.
- Different relationship styles. Some value a partner who shares housework, talks openly about feelings, or supports their career.
- Meeting someone serious. Women who join international dating sites are often looking for a long-term relationship and marriage, not a holiday romance.
What they are not looking for is to be treated as a stereotype. Thai women on dating sites are teachers, nurses, accountants, business owners, students and civil servants, in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, Phuket and every other province. Treat the person, not the idea.
Thai values a foreign boyfriend should understand
Family. Thai culture places great importance on caring for parents. Many adult children support their parents financially, and meeting the family is a serious step. Being polite to her parents, and especially to older relatives, matters a lot.
Respect and the wai. The *wai*, a slight bow with the palms pressed together, is the traditional greeting and a sign of respect. You do not need to master it, but returning a wai politely is appreciated.
Kreng jai. This idea means being considerate and not wanting to impose on others or cause them trouble. It explains why a Thai partner may not tell you directly when something is wrong. Ask gently, and make it safe to say no.
Jai yen, a cool heart. Staying calm is valued; losing your temper in public causes a loss of face for everyone. Raised voices in a restaurant can end a relationship faster than you think.
Buddhism. Most Thais are Buddhist. Dress modestly at temples, never point your feet at a person or a Buddha image, and do not touch anyone on the head.
The monarchy. The Thai royal family is deeply respected, and criticising it is a serious crime under Thai law. Do not joke about it.

Communication: language and LINE
Many Thai women speak some English, and many are learning. Write simply, be patient, and do not mock mistakes. Learning a few Thai words shows real interest:
- Sawasdee means hello. Men add *khrap* at the end of a sentence to be polite, and women add *kha*.
- Khob khun means thank you.
- Sabai dee mai? means how are you?
In Thailand, the messaging app LINE is used much more than WhatsApp. Moving from AsianLove to LINE is normal once you trust each other, but take your time and keep early conversations on the site, where you can report and block if needed.
Dating a Thai woman: practical tips
- Be clear about your intentions. Saying that you want a long-term relationship is reassuring, not too much.
- Go slowly with physical affection in public. Holding hands is fine in cities; kissing in public is still frowned upon by many.
- Plan dates she enjoys. Thai food is a big part of social life. Asking her to choose a favourite restaurant or street-food spot is a great start.
- Respect her time with friends and family. A Thai partner who includes you in family meals is showing that you matter.
- Talk about money openly and kindly. Customs about who pays differ. Generosity is appreciated, but a healthy relationship never feels like a transaction.
Sin sod: a tradition worth understanding
If a relationship moves towards marriage, you may hear about *sin sod*, a traditional gift from the groom to the bride's family. Practice varies a lot: some families expect it, many return it to the couple after the wedding, and many modern couples do not use it at all. Talk about it openly and early, with your partner and, when the time is right, with her family. It should never be a surprise or a source of pressure.
Safety for Thai women dating online
Scammers do not only target foreign men. Thai women are also targeted by fake "foreign engineers", "doctors" and "soldiers" who promise love and then ask for money, or say a parcel with gifts is stuck at customs and needs a fee.
- Never send money to someone you have not met in person.
- Insist on video calls before you trust someone.
- Meet in public the first time, and tell a friend where you are going.
- Be careful with investment offers from someone you met online.

Long distance and the future
Many Thai-foreign couples spend time apart before living in the same country. Regular calls, planned visits and honest talks about the future (where to live, work, family support and children) are what make it work. Our guide to long-distance relationships in Asia can help.
