Long-distance relationships: making it work across Asia
Meeting someone online often means meeting someone far away: Manila and Cebu, Bangkok and Chiang Mai, or two different countries. Distance makes things harder, but many couples make it work. These habits help.
Talk regularly, and in more than one way
Find a rhythm that suits both of you: a good-morning message, a call a few times a week, a longer video call at the weekend. Voice notes and photos of everyday moments help you feel part of each other's day.
Respect time zones and routines
Thailand is one hour behind the Philippines. If one of you lives further away, the gap can be much bigger. Agree on times that do not mean one person always stays up late. Work, study and family come first sometimes, and that is normal.
Build trust slowly and honestly
Be honest about your plans, your situation and what you want. Trust grows from consistency: doing what you said you would do, week after week. Be wary of anyone who asks for money, however long you have been talking. A real partner will not put you in that position. Our article on spotting romance scams explains the warning signs.
Plan visits
Having a date for the next meeting gives you both something to look forward to. For a first visit:
- Meet in public first and book your own accommodation.
- Tell family or friends where you will be.
- Check entry and visa rules for the country you are visiting, well before you travel.
On AsianLove you can add your travel plans to your profile, so people in the place you are visiting can see you are coming.
Talk about the future
At some point, talk honestly about where the relationship is going: who might move, work, family expectations, and timing. It does not have to be decided early, but it should not be avoided for ever either.
