First date safety tips for Manila and Bangkok
Meeting someone in person for the first time should be exciting, not stressful. A few simple habits keep you safe without spoiling the fun, wherever you are.
Before the date
- Video call first. It confirms that the person matches their photos and makes the first meeting less awkward.
- Tell a friend. Share who you are meeting, where and when, and arrange to send a quick message during or after the date.
- Plan your own way there and back. Use a ride-hailing app or public transport you trust, and do not rely on your date for a lift home.
- Keep the conversation on the site until you feel sure about the person. You can always share your number later.
Choosing the place
- Somewhere public and busy: a cafe, a restaurant, a mall or a market, during the day or early evening.
- Avoid going to anyone's home or hotel on a first date, and do not invite them to yours.
- Pick a place you can leave easily if you want to.
During the date
- Watch your drink, and order it yourself.
- Keep your phone charged and with you.
- Keep valuables close in crowded places.
- You can leave at any time. You do not owe anyone an explanation if you feel uncomfortable.
Money
Never lend or send money to someone you have just met, and be wary of sudden emergencies. Read our guide to spotting romance scams.
Emergency numbers
- Philippines: 911 for police, fire and ambulance.
- Thailand: 191 for police, 1669 for medical emergencies, and 1155 for the Tourist Police, who speak English.
After the date
Message your friend to say you are home. If anything about the date worried you, report the profile on AsianLove; it helps keep other members safe too. And if it went well, enjoy it.
